Records Management provides information to University departments regarding the proper procedures for retaining and discarding University records. The program assists departments with complying with records management requirements and best practices. The program sets retention and disposal standards for University records through the University’s Records Retention and Disposal Schedule, which is required by the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR) before a public record can be destroyed legally. The unauthorized alteration, defacement, destruction, removal, or concealment of a record is subject to the penalties set forth in Criminal Law Article, § 8-606, Annotated Code of Maryland.
A Certificate of Records Disposal should be completed whenever records are discarded. The Certificate of Records Disposal must be retained in the Unit for 10 years after records disposal.
